Two Months

Today marks the first day of my third month of living a sugar-free/flour-free/wheat-free lifestyle. I weighed in this morning at 289.6.... exactly 10 lbs down from what I weighed on January 1.

When I first set out on this "final" leg of my weight loss journey, my goal was to lose 10 lbs per month... so technically I should be really happy with this progress.

But there is a part of me that is, honestly, disappointed.

I know, I know... 10 lbs is great. I'm down a total of 29.4 lbs. The fact that I'm almost 9 weeks sugar-free is great. I'm making good progress. I'm staying focused. I've tracked my food for 45 days in a row. I'm down about 2 sizes. I'm exercising 4 times per week and loving it.

Life is good.

But I think I should be losing more weight.

After my last post, I tried to start eating more calories. It lasted about 3-4 days, then I just slipped right back into low calories. I don't *think* I'm doing it on purpose... it's just that I'm full and satisfied without the extra food. And I'm too busy and stretched out to even WANT TO think about food all the time, especially how to eat MORE. At the end of the night, especially after a good workout, the last thing I want to do is stuff my face.

Today I sat down and crunched a few numbers from My Fitness Pal. Since 12/28/12, I have averaged anywhere between 1026-1080 calories (NET) per day.

Yes, I know. That is REALLY low for someone almost 300 lbs. I think it really is the cause of my slow losses. My carbs range from 22 - 30%, and my protein ranges from 23-30%. I guess my diet is high in fat, being 40-52% (but mostly from eggs, cheese, olive oil and nuts).

All I know is that I have to find more quality, nutritious food. And I'm probably going to have to eat more often during the day, which will be a challenge in a busy classroom environment. I need more protein and less fat. I think my carbs are good, since I'm exercising and since they come from fruit and veggies.

I've been having so much fun doing group classes at the gym. Zumba, piloxing, kickboxing, hip-hop dance... Monday through Thursday for two weeks straight I've been going, and getting awesome calorie burns each time. My daughter and her bff have been my workout buddies, which gives me added incentive and accountability. Funny how it's possible to make time when one of my children is involved.

  1. Maybe you don't necessarily have to eat more but just change what you're eating a bit to include foods that have more fat and calories. You're doing amazing though!

Honestly, while I can appreciate what you are trying to do, and I understand where people get this idea that carbs = bad, as a health care professional and someone who studied nutrition and human physiology, one of the things that I think may be hindering your weight loss is the high fat in your diet, compared to carbs. Even if it is mostly good fat, the fact is that human bodies are not made to break down fat. The majority of our daily calories (55%) should come from carbs, and fat should only make up 25% our of daily calories. The closer you are to this range, the more efficiently the body works and the faster your metabolism. So, perhaps you are inadvertently causing your metabolism to work less efficiently by cutting out too many carbs.

    I'm only saying this based on what I have learned, and I hope you don't find any of this offensive. Just a suggestion as to why you may not be loosing as much as you would like. Personally, I have been trying to stick to 55% carbs, 25% fat, 20% protein, and so far have love 15 lbs this month. My issue is not getting in enough protein. I usually end up high in carbs or fat, and so that is something I have to work on.

  4. I agree that you're probably not eating enough and that you should add some additional protien and reduce your fat intake. Experiment a little and see what really works for you. I also began my weight loss journey this month and I've lost 9 lbs so far. I've yo-yo dieted all my life and have never been able to keep the weight off so I'm happy with that number. The difference between this time and every other time is that I decided I wasn't going to deprive myself and stay away from foods that are my enemy. If I want something bad like chips, I will literally count every single chip, put it in a ziplock bag or small bowl and chew very slowly. I average about 1000 to 1200 calories per day. I've been staying away from red meat and carbs and instead really loading up on the veggies and low sodium home made soups. So I'm feeling full and haven't felt deprived. Anyway, I think 10 lbs is awesome! I would take into consideration that you are probably gaining some muscle as well. Also, healthy weight loss is about 2 lbs a week anyway. Try not to focus too much on how much has been lost or wasn't lost that month. As long as it's not a gain, that's what really matters. You are losing weight so what you're doing is working for you. I know that you will make it to your goal! Keep kickin butt!

  5. i lose really slowly just like you so i know what u mean. its soooooooooo frustrating. my husband, my son and i are all doing the same diet, walking/jogging at night and of course they have both lost double what i have lost since jan 1 and its very discouraging to me!! never the less, i am down a size and feel better but am no where near where i want to be. its hard. good luck to u...

  6. Congrats on your ten pound loss! But I think you are right. You need to eat more. You may not be hungry because your metabolism has slowed down. I had two weeks where I only lost a few ounces and I took the week to pretty much eat what my body needed and I lost three pounds. You're working out really hard and you need to fuel those muscles so that they don't get burned off instead of the fat because that also lowers your metabolism. Listen to me, I'm an expert... I've been writing a blog for a few weeks now ;)

  8. I recently posted about trying to be content with "only" an 8 1/2 pound loss. I know that 2 pounds a week is a good number. But I still feels like the scale should be moving more.

    I tried to focus on what I had accomplished that month (like walking 50 miles!!)

  9. Ten pounds is a fantastic loss Hollie! It sounds like you have found something that is working well for you, even if you tweak it a bit. When you say net calories, is that after subtracting calories burned by exercise?

    Sugar free is a great feeling :)

  10. I think that's a great loss but totally know where you're coming from feeling like it's not enough. I would vary it and go lower some days and higher others to keep mixing it up.

    I'm so proud of you for all the tracking you do on My Fitness Pal. You put the rest of us to shame :)

  13. It seems you are much wanted that extra weight loss. But the thing is you should not stretch it more and more. Great to know that you lost 10lbs in a month.Just set up small goals which you can achieve so that it will encourage you more.

  16. Congrats to you! The longer you go sugar free, the cravings basically disappear. My own sugar free experiment taught me a lot about self control. I do nosh on sugar from time to time now, but it's totally IN control.

  17. I know it's hard when the scale doesn't move as fast as you would like it to! BEEN THERE!!! I have been on a weight loss journey for the past 12 months and have lost 105 pounds so far. Like you, I have been counting calories and I try to stay at 1,000 net calories each day. There were times throughout my journey that my progress on the scale would slow and I found that when I bumped my calorie intake up to 1,200 - 1,400 per day for a few days that I would reset my metabolism and then could go back down to the 1,000 and still keep losing.

    I have had a lot of success by actually eating breakfast (which I never did before) and eating small meals/snacks throughout the day instead of three big meals. Doing this allows my metabolism to ramp up several times per day instead of just a few.

    Congratulations on your successes so far!! Slow losses can be frustrating but hang in there - even if you don't get to the finish line as fast as you would have liked - what matters is you ARE going to get there!!!!

  18. Congrats not only on your loss because that is great but for tracking and continuing going forward and the exercise all those things help in adopting a healthy lifestyle.

    I was thinking though you may want to up your protein a bit. It seems on the low side to me and lower your fat just a bit.

  19. I agree that you probably aren't eating enough but I completely understand it. I've upped my calories to 1700 calories but I still find myself struggling to eat that much and I can't seem to get enough protein in me. It's all a learning process. Keep going and you'll learn what works for you.

  20. First off I like to congratulate you on your progess! Good Job! Over the last 9 months I've made some major changes in my life that have caused big changes in my body and health. Honestly, so want to take in about a total of 1700 calories a day. But, that will decrease during your excerise for the day. So in total you'd actually be eating about 1100 calories a day. You want to try and eat eggs, a yogurt (fat free), maybe a protein bar (cliff bar)for breakfast and a glass of water. Now for lunch or dinner you want to make a smoothie. This consist of: Fat Free milk (2 cupsish maybe more), frozen strawberries, a banana, 5-6 ice cups creamy peanut butter, and if you want whey protein. This would be best to have after your workout. Another good meal to have is a sandwich, crackers and nature vally bars (honey oats). Diet is key in losing weight. You must not eat out. Once a week is fine for a treat but, if you can try to do it once every two weeks. Now, for thw work out portion. 5 days week is what you should aim for. Cardio burns fat, but it is high intensity cardio which burns the fat like butter. What I sugguest for high intensity cardio is sprints for 15 minutes. Why this is good is it is a stop and go process for your heart. Which increases and decreases your heart rate. Sprints you can run at your own pace but try and keep the pace up. And make sure to control your breathing. Second portion of the high intensity cardio is to try and run a mile as fast as you can. without stopping. Try and decrease your time every two weeks. I've been doing this for 9 months I started out at 240 pounds and now Im at 185 and I feel great. Definitely the best I've ever felt in my life. If you'd like to know anything else or have questions I'd love to answer them. Keep up the good work. It is time, dedication, determination, and discipline.

  22. You have lost an incredible amount of weight and are looking great! I've lost 45 lbs in 6 months while trying out the apple cider vinegar diet but have also increased my exercise and have stopped drinking soda.   24. Loved reading your blog. It is good to know that other people have ups and downs like I do. I have struggled with weight loss my whole life. I have major problems losing weight. I always thought it was my metabolism and that was why I could not loose weight. In January I was at a book store and I picked up a diet book called The Thyroid Solution Diet by a Dr. Ridha Arem. He is a thyroid doctor out of Houston Texas. He specializes in the thyroid but works closely with many disease related to the thyroid.
